Framing Lotte Reiniger

Queen Mary University of London Department of Film and the Centre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations, invites you to ‘Framing Lotte Reiniger’, an evening of talks with a film screening on Friday 8th December 2017.

Following on from the German Screen Studies Network ‘Living Pasts, Moving Present’ conference and related events in 2016, we have invited four scholars to Queen Mary to present their recent work on the  pioneering German animator Lotte Reiniger.

The study of Reiniger’s work straddles a number of different academic disciplines (German Studies, Film and Animation Studies, Art History) and artistic movements (Silhouette Craft, Modernism, Shadowplay, the Decorative, Folk Art). Our four speakers will reflect on their chosen frame or framework for approaching this important but neglected artist. ‘Framing Lotte Reiniger’ will showcase the diversity of research being conducted within the field, offering a platform for sharing ideas and helping to forge a network.

Rachel Palfreyman (University of Nottingham and GSSN member)

Katherine Rochester (Bryn Mawr College)

Caroline Ruddell (Brunel University)

These papers will be followed by a short Q & A panel and a screening of Reiniger’s silhouette animation work – a programme of rarely-screened shorts which were originally shown to English audiences by the London Film Society between 1925-1939.

The evening will take place in the Hitchcock Cinema at the Queen Mary campus in Mile End, London from 5.30-8.15pm.
