FOKUS: Film from Germany

The 10th edition of **Goethe-Institut’s Fokus: Films from Germany festival provided a rich and thought-provoking celebration of German cinema across Scotland. Running from January to February 2026, the festival marked its anniversary with a curated programme titled “Women: Words and Worlds”, which explored over a century of filmmaking through representations of women and their changing roles in society.

Bringing together films from the silent era to the present day, the programme offered audiences a wide-ranging journey through German cultural and cinematic history. Screenings were presented in their original language with English subtitles and included a diverse mix of genres and perspectives, alongside a dedicated strand for younger audiences and school groups.

As part of this wider festival, the Fokus Films from Germany programme—organised by the Goethe-Institut Glasgow in collaboration with the German Screen Studies Network—extended its reach to St Andrews. The St Andrews run opened with a special screening of a recent restoration of G. W. Pabst’s silent masterpiece Pandora’s Box (1929), held in School III, St Salvator’s Quad. The event featured an introduction by the GSSN’s own Paul Flaig and was free and open to all, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to accessibility and public engagement.
