Es Brennt [It’s Burning]: Screening & Study Day (Goethe Institut & KCL, March/April 2025)

An exciting series of events around Erol Afşin’s 2023 film Es Brennt [It’s Burning] will be taking place in-person in London as well as online this March and April. This prize-winning film explores the consequences of racist abuse on a German-born family of Arab origin in contemporary Berlin. The Goethe-Institut will be screening the film online through its streaming platform, Goethe-on-Demand and will be available to view throughout the United Kingdom from Saturday April 5th to April 12th. Ahead of the film’s streaming, Goethe-Institut in London will also hold a live screening of Es Brennt on Wednesday, at 7 PM 26th of March, with tickets available here. The film will also be shown, on March 20th, as part of special Study Day led by members of the German department at King’s College, London (Katrin Schreiter, Áine McMurtry and Lizzie Stewart) and exploring modern German immigration history and Turkish-German perspectives through discussions, workshops and a discussion of Es Brennt. These events will take place at the Goethe Insititut, 50 Princes Gate, Exhibition Road, London, SW7 2PH.
