Back in the GDR: Stanley Forman and ETV

Back in the GDR: Stanley Forman and ETV (Dr Franziska Nössig, Dr Martin Brady, King’s College London)

This sub-project examines the film archive of British communist, filmmaker and distributor Stanley Forman (Plato Films, later Educational and Television Films). His collection of socialist documentary films from Eastern Europe (initially donated to the BFI, now with Adam Matthew) is a unique resource for research into Anglo-German film relations across four decades of German division. We are investigating the passage across 60 years of films from the GDR – with a particular focus on the “archive” or “compilation” films of Andrew and Annelie Thorndike – through Forman’s activist archive in London, to the global, educational, digital archives of today.
