Teaching German Through Film and Television: Language, Culture, and Context
A one-day CPD event for teachers of German
October 4, 2025, University of Warwick
This full-day, interactive professional development event invites secondary school teachers to explore how film and television can be used as dynamic tools for teaching German, deepening cultural understanding, and sparking critical thinking in learners at all levels. The day will feature hands-on workshops, collaborative lesson planning, guided discussions and a film screening.
We will be working with two examples relating to the Weimar period: the visually rich and thematically complex TV series Babylon Berlin and the classic 1930 children’s film Emil und die Detektive. By delving into their historical and cultural contexts, participants will develop practical strategies for using audiovisual media to support language acquisition, promote intercultural awareness, and encourage student engagement.
Whether you already use visual media in your teaching or you’re looking for new ways to inspire students, this event offers an opportunity to connect with peers, exchange ideas, and leave with ready-to-use classroom activities and resources.
Attendance is free, but registration is essential. Please contact Dora Osborne [email protected] by 22 September to book your place! A limited number of bursaries are available to contribute to train travel and accommodation.
